The fifth-generation Nissan Micra, which is expected in India next year, has scored 4 stars in Euro NCAP crash test results with standard equipment. With the optional safety pack, the car scored 5 stars. The tested model had a 0.9-litre petrol engine with 1,098 kg kerb weight (standard variant).
The Euro-spec Micra comes with dual front airbags, side airbags (head and chest), seat belt pretensioner and load limiter, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) for city and inter-urban, and Speed Assistance as standard. With this standard safety equipment, the car scored 91% for adult occupant safety, 79% for child and 68% for the pedestrian.
Optional safety pack includes AEB Pedestrian and Lane Assist System, which helped the Micra score 79% for pedestrian safety.
Adult Occupant
For adult occupant safety, the report commented that the passenger compartment of the Micra remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger. In the full-width frontal impact, the driver was well protected. Dummy readings for the rear passenger indicated that the pelvis had slipped under the seatbelt and protection of this body area was rated as poor. Otherwise, protection was good or adequate. In the side barrier test, all critical body areas were well protected and the Micra scored maximum points. In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was adequate and that of other body areas was good. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision.
As for the Autonomous Emergency Braking, the report said that the system performed well avoiding collisions at most test speeds.
Child Occupant
For child occupants, in the frontal offset test, dummy readings indicated good protection for all critical body areas of a 10-year dummy. For a 6-year dummy, protection of the chest was rated as marginal and that of other critical body areas was good. In the side barrier test, protection of both dummies was good and the Micra scored maximum points.
Pedestrian Protection
Moving on to the pedestrian protection, Euro NCAP report says that the bonnet provided predominantly good or adequate protection to the head of a struck pedestrian, with poor results recorded in the stiff windscreen pillars. The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians’ legs and the protection of the pelvis area was also good at all test locations.
The report also observed that the optional Lane Assist System which gently steers the car away from a lane marking if it is drifting out of lane, worked as expected. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system performed adequately in tests at highway speeds.
The fifth-generation Nissan Micra made its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, and might not come to India this year.
