Video: Maruti Suzuki Dzire 2017

It’s amazing, isn’t it? A compact sedan that was originally developed from a hatchback has now got its own identity. It’s no longer a ‘Swift Dzire’, but just the Dzire.

A new identity also means a new platform. So, the Dzire is built on the ‘Heartect’ platform which also underpins the Baleno. And that’s why you see a lot of soft curves in its design, very similar to the Baleno. I personally think that the overall exterior design is kind of an amalgamation of the Baleno, new Swift and the Ciaz. Strangely, in some angles, it kinda reminds me of the ambassador. For some, it might remind the Ford Aspire.

Anyways, it doesn’t matter which car it reminds you of, the new Dzire now looks proportionate. It no longer looks like two different cars glued together. Except for the LED headlamps, it looks a lot different from the Swift hatchback. The designers have done a good job this time.

Same story on the inside, the designers have tried to give the Dzire a more desirable interior than the hatchback. While the new swift has circular air vents, the Dzire gets a trapezoid shape. Even the instrument cluster gets a trapezoid housing. The dual-tone dashboard gets burl wood inserts, and the steering wheel gets a leather wrap. Overall, the dashboard looks a lot more premium than before.

Features wise, there is a push-button start, 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment system with Navigation, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, automatic AC, height-adjustable driver’s seat, rear AC vents, reversing camera, rear parking sensors and a lot more.

One complaint the Dzire owners always had is the rear space. It appears to have been addressed, as the new Dzire is 40 mm wider and the wheelbase is 20 mm longer than before.

The good news continues with the safety equipment too. The dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, ISOFix child seat mounts are standard across all variants. A big thumbs up for that.

There is no change in the powertrains. The 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.3-litre diesel engines continue here as well. Because Maruti thinks why change something that works. Not complaining, but just saying it’s a logical thing to do. They gave better space, better interiors, better looks and kept the engines. But this time, the Auto Gear Shift or the AMT is available both in petrol and diesel.
