If you have a gasoline or a diesel car, you just go to a gas station, fill her up and keep going. Same is not possible with an electric vehicle. Charging takes time no matter how fast it is, and there’ll be range anxiety. Not just that, the initial cost of buying an EV will be higher because of the included batteries.

Known for founding the Reva, India’s first electric car company, Chetan Maini’s new venture Sun Mobility hopes to address this problem by making modular batteries, that can be swapped at a station, similar to refuelling a gasoline or a diesel car. The battery will be provided to the user on a pay-as-you-go model. This solution is expected to significantly bring down the price of the EVs.

Sun Mobility is a 50:50 joint venture between Maini’s Virya Mobility 5.0 and Delhi-based Uday Khemka’s SUN Group.
A pilot project is planned by January 2019 in Bengaluru, which is currently the largest market for EVs in the country.
