Mercedes-Benz unveiled the fifth member of the new E-Class family – the E-Class Cabriolet, ahead of the Geneva Motor Show next week. Compared to its predecessor, the new E-Class Cabriolet has grown in length, width, height and wheelbase as well.
When the soft top is up, the E‑Class Cabriolet has a silhouette similar to that of the Coupé and displays the same expressive proportions. On the outside, it gets LED headlamps and two-piece LED tail lamps. Merc says, the tail lamps “exude a brilliance” reminiscent of the glow given off by a jet engine. As a new feature, the tail lamps also put on a special light show for the driver when they approach or leave the car. The Cabriolet sits 15 mm lower than the saloon.
The fabric soft top can be had in dark brown, dark blue, dark red or black, and operates in 20 seconds and at speeds of up to 50 km/h. If you opt for the Cabriolet Comfort package, you don’t have to stop to operate the boot separator manually. The boot measures at 385 litres (310 litres when the roof is open), and there is a 50:50 split rear seats if you plan to go skiing or golfing. And if you’re worried about your hairstyle getting messed up, you can request for AIRCAP, and AIRSCARF to keep you neck warm while you drive with the roof down.
The entry-level model on the inside combines two round dials and a 7-inch colour display cluster with an 8.4-inch diagonal screen. Two 12.3 inch displays are optional. Steering wheel gets touch controls for operating the instrument cluster, multimedia system and other functions. Merc says, the interiors with wood and macchiato beige lend the Cabriolet “a cool, exclusive yachting look”. 64 color ambient lighting is available as an option.
At the market launch, the Cabriolet is expected to offer the same engine choices as the Coupé, the 2.0 4-cylinder diesel, the 2.0 4-cylinder petrol, and 3.0 litre V6 4Matic, all paired to the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. The Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension will be an option. Using the Dynamic Select switch, the driver can also select different suspension characteristics in combination with the Air Body Contro system: “Comfort”, ECO, “Sport”, “Sport +” and “Individual”.
The optional COMAND Online infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Garmin Map Pilot system.
Safety kit includes Pre-Safe, front airbags, knee airbag for driver, thorax/pelvis bags for driver and front passenger, and optional curtain airbags and side bags.
Mercedes has plans for a 25th anniversary special model as well, which will feature visual upgrades aimed primarily at “collectors and lovers of unique cars”. Those who cant wait for that can go for the AMG styling package.
The Cabriolet measures 4826 mm in length, 1860 mm in width and 1428 mm in height. Wheelbase measures at 2873 mm. Prices are yet to be announced.
