Suzuki has launched the new-generation WagonR and WagonR Stingray in Japan. The minicar or miniwagon as Suzuki calls it, comes in three main variants — Hybrid FX, Hybrid FZ, and the Stingray T. The new WagonR adopts a complete van-like design on the outside with a boxy shape and a short-flat front overhang. The B-pillars, headlights and bumper-mounted taillamps add more to the van-like looks. The Stingray on the other hand gets a different set of projector headlamps, taillamps, grille, bumper design, and subtle chrome garnishing. Overall, the Stingray sports a high-gloss finish.
The new design on the inside has a centre mounted instrument cluster with a multi-information display (MID), and a floating tablet-like infotainment system with navigation. There’s a heads-up display as well. The gear lever has been mounted on the dash. While the regular WagonR gets a dual-tone dashboard, the Stingray gets an all-black dash with red accents. Rear doors get umbrella holders.
A 660 cc 3-cylinder petrol engine powers the WagonR, producing about 51 bhp and 60 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT. There’s a 2.3 kW (about 3.1 hp) electric motor with a dedicated lithium-ion battery for the Hybrid functionality, producing 50 Nm of torque. The motor kicks in when the vehicle starts to move after an idle-stop, and during creep. The Stingray model gets a higher state of tune for the same 660 cc engine. In Japan, the new WagonR can be had in 4WD too.
As for safety features, the new-gen WagonR gets Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS). Both WagonR and WagonR Stingray measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height. Fuel efficiency is claimed at 33.4 km/l (Hybrid).
