The G20 3 Series got its facelift just over 2 years ago, and now there’s another one for some reason. Prices in Germany start at €46,400 for the sedan and €47,700 for the Touring. The M3 and M4 models have also been updated, but we’ll talk about them separately.
Let’s start with the styling revisions on the 3 Series sedan then, shall we? If you’re wondering what are the changes? Well, you aren’t alone. There isn’t much to talk about except for the addition of Arctic Race Blue metallic and Fire Red metallic options to the color palette, and new double-spoke 19-inch M light-alloy wheels (part of the M Sport package). These wheels can be ordered either in Jet Black or a two-tone finish. A different set of new 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and bi-colour finish are also available for both models.
As standard, both models roll out of the factory on new 17-inch wheels as standard (18-inch for PHEV variants). As for other changes, BMW claims to have done some chassis tweaks as well to offer an even better blend of sportiness and comfort. One of the changes includes stiffer mountings for the rear dampers. Those opting for the M Sport package will get the M Sport suspension as standard. For those who want to spend more, the adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and variable sport steering is optionally available with the M Sport package.
The M340i attempts to look sportier with a mesh grille, exclusive 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and trapezoidal tailpipe trims. It also features model-specific gloss-black mirror caps and a rear diffuser. For some strange reason, the boot lid spoiler is body-colored as opposed to gloss-black.
In case you’re scratching your head, the M340i xDrive is powered by a 3.0L straight-six turbo petrol engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The output figures are 275 kW (374 metric hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). If you remember, BMW had shaved off 10 kW or 13 metric hp in 2022. There’s also M340d xDrive, powered by a 3.0L straight-six turbo diesel engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The output figures here are 250 kW (340 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). Just so you know, the mild-hybrid system offers a temporary boost of 8 kW or 11 metric hp.
Other options include 318i (2.0L turbo petrol; 115 kW/156 metric hp and 250 Nm/184 lb-ft), 320i (2.0L turbo petrol; 135 kW/184 metric hp and 300 Nm/221 lb-ft), 320i xDrive, 330i xDrive (2.0L turbo petrol; 180 kW/245 metric hp and 400 Nm/295 lb-ft), 318d (2.0L turbo diesel; 110 kW/150 metric hp and 320 Nm/236 lb-ft), 320d (2.0L turbo diesel; 140 kW/190 metric hp and 400 Nm/295 lb-ft), 320d xDrive, and 330d xDrive (3.0L straight-six turbo diesel; 210 kW/286 metric hp and 650 Nm/479 lb-ft). There’s no manual transmission option on any of the variants mentioned so far.
For those who’d like to plug-in, BMW offers 330e and 330e xDrive. Both models combine a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission. No, the 330e xDrive doesn’t get an extra motor, but it’s an AWD variant. The ICE produces 135 kW (184 metric hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), while the e-motor develops 80 kW (109 metric hp) and 265 Nm (195 lb-ft). The system output figures, however, are 215 kW (292 metric hp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft). A 19.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is located underneath the rear seats, which is estimated to offer a WLTP all-electric range of anywhere between 85 to 101 km (53 to 63 mi). The range is a bit less in the xDrive variant, understandably.
Inside, there’s the latest-gen BMW iDrive system with QuickSelect function (improved UX, enabling the driver to select the desired function directly from the home screen without the need to enter submenus), standard personal eSIM with 5G capability, new flat-bottom M leather steering wheel (M Sport pack), and new materials including M Performtex for the optional sports seats. Three-zone automatic climate control and BMW Live Cockpit Plus come standard.
