As we all know, the future is all about recycling, sustainability, closed-loop manufacturing.. and all those nice terminologies I can’t recall. As you might also know, every once in a while, a carmaker decides to recycle nameplates, and the latest example is the ‘Frontera’. Not too long ago, about two decades ago actually, it was used for a rebadged Isuzu. Now though, it is being used for a rebadged second-gen Citroen C3 Aircross.
Of course, the Frontera is available in both Opel and Vauxhall flavors, with the latter exclusive to the UK market. In addition to all-electric, there’ll also be hybrid options to choose from, but we’ll talk about that in just a minute. As for styling, the new Frontera simply adopts the styling language from its siblings such as Mokka and Grandland for the front part, while the rear-end looks fairly unique I guess. The side profile is almost identical, except for the lack of body cladding and unique aluminum wheels.
Inside is where the new Frontera tries its best to differentiate itself from the Citroen C3 Aircross. The dashboard design is different, and so are the steering wheel, centre console and seats. Depending on the trim, you get two 10-inch displays on the dashboard. The rest of the features and safety systems are more or less gonna be the same as those of the C3 Aircross.
The all-electric Frontera’s front electric motor offers a measly 84 kW (113 metric hp), a significantly low number compared with the 115 kW (156 metric hp) Mokka. The torque figure is undisclosed at the moment, but it’s probably not gonna be that high either. The battery pack capacity is unknown, but there’ll be two battery pack options with claimed WLTP ranges of up to 300 km (186 mi) and 400 km (248.5 mi).
The mild-hybrid variant combines a 73.5 kW (100 metric hp) 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a 21 kW (28.5 metric hp) electric motor integrated into a 6-speed DCT. There’ll also be a regular hybrid option with a 100 kW (136 metric hp) 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine.
