As you might know, Volkswagen unveiled the 3rd-gen Tiguan recently, but it’s not gonna be available until next year. While we wait for that to happen, the company wanted to showcase the off-roading capabilities of the 2nd-gen Tiguan, the Tiguan that is currently on sale. And so, VW organized off-roading events across India recently, specifically to showcase what the Tiguan can do where there are no paved surfaces. One such event happened somewhere outskirts of Bengaluru, and I had the opportunity to experience its capabilities.
The “SUVW” as the company affectionately calls it, was able to do maneuvers such as wheel articulations, going over steep side inclines without rolling over, descending a steep hill in style, and of course, water wading. Honestly, I was quite surprised at how effortlessly the Tiguan was able to tackle that specially made challenging terrain. I mean, I was under the impression that the Tiguan 4Motion could just do some light off-roading, but this event proved that the vehicle can handle a lot more than just going over some rough urban patches.
Of all the challenges the Tiguan had to tackle that day, this was the most scary one, and I almost thought the vehicle was gonna roll-over, but no, it was a smooth slide to the side and down. Watch the YouTube video embedded above to see more of Tiguan 4Motion tackling some rough terrain with ease.
The Tiguan currently on sale in India is powered by a 2.0-litre (1,984 cc) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that offers 140 kW (190 metric hp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG (with paddle shifters) and 4Motion AWD system.
