Honda Prelude coming back with GM’s Ultium help?
Honda is showcasing a bunch of concepts at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly Tokyo Motor Show), which include a sports coupe, a couple of cute city cars, and of course, an autonomous van for shared mobility services.
The Prelude concept grabs all the attention, for obvious reasons. It’s a stunning, two-door electric coupe concept that according to the company, offers a preview of the company’s future models. Which means, Honda is planning to introduce more than one performance car in the future. The company claims that these cars will offer the “joy of driving”. For those who may not know, Honda produced a sports coupe called ‘Prelude’ between 1978 and 2001. There were five generations of it and only time can tell if this homage model is gonna be as successful as the original.
As for the design, its front-three-quarter angles remind me of one of those Toyota concepts while the rear-end kinda gives me Ioniq 6 vibes. Either way, it’s a stunning design, and I’m pretty sure it’ll sell in large quantities when it enters production.
Up next, there’s the SUSTAINA-C concept that might remind you of the Honda e hatch, but as the name suggests, the concept is not really about the design of the vehicle itself but about the materials and the sustainable ways to use them. Honda says that the concept is made of acrylic resin that is recycled and reused. There’s no clarity on whether the whole concept is made of this resin or some parts of it. But the message of the concept is to do more with less.
There’s also the Cruise Origin concept, which I think is fairly self-explanatory. It’s an autonomous vehicle made for ride-sharing businesses. What’s not-so-obvious, however, is that the vehicle is being co-developed with Cruise LLC, a company owned by General Motors. Both companies are planning to launch a commercial service in Japan in 2026.
