The 8th-gen BMW 5 Series lineup is now joined by two plug-in hybrid variants: 530e – priced at €65,300 and 550e xDrive – priced at €77,300 in Germany. The M Sport package costs an extra €3,100.
The M Sport package adds some visual upgrades including aero elements for the front and rear bumpers; black side skirts; M-specific rear diffuser; 19-inch M light-alloy double-spoke wheels; M high-gloss shadow line elements; M Sport suspension; M leather steering wheel; anthracite headliner; aluminum inserts, etc. Carbon mirror caps and M Sport brakes are optional extras.
The 530e combines a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. This is a rear-wheel-drive model. The combustion engine produces 140 kW (190 metric hp) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) while the e-motor offers 135 kW (183.5 metric hp) and up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque (effective torque through pre-gearing stage). The system output figures, however, are 220 kW (299 metric hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
There’s a 22.1 kWh (gross) lithium-ion battery pack that is estimated to offer a pure electric WLTP range of anywhere between 93 and 103 km (58-64 mi). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 6.3 seconds. Top speed is 230 km/h (143 mph); electric-only top speed is 140 km/h (87 mph).
The photos are of the 530e, but the 550e xDrive combines a 3.0-litre straight-six turbo petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. This is an all-wheel-drive model. The ICE produces 230 kW (313 metric hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) while the e-motor offers up to 145 kW (197 metric hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The system output figures, however, are 360 kW (489 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).
The battery pack in this case is also 22.1 kWh, estimated to offer a pure electric WLTP range of anywhere between 83 and 90 km (51-56 mi). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.3 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph); electric-only top speed is 140 km/h (87 mph).
