Volkswagen has facelifted its Touareg SUV with styling revisions and tech upgrades. The lineup includes Touareg, Touareg Elegance and Touareg R-Line, with prices in Germany starting at €69,200, €75,070 and €79,660, respectively. There’s also the Touareg R eHybrid, priced at €93,870. All prices include 19% VAT. The new Touareg boasts—among other things—an improved suspension setup that is claimed to offer a perfect blend of performance and comfort.
The photos here showcase the R-Line and Elegance. The revised front fascia includes new IQ.Light HD Matrix headlights, with each headlight unit containing more than 19,000 LEDs. In addition to those three L-shaped running lights, you can also notice a light band underneath that runs across the full width of the car. The same is sorta kinda mimicked at the rear in the taillights. The R-Line boasts 19-inch ‘Coventry’ alloy wheels, while the other two trims settle for 18-inch ones.
The Touareg R eHybrid sits on top of the range—literal or otherwise, as it rides on 20-inch ‘Braga’ alloy wheels. The wheels hide blue-painted calipers with a silver R logo. R logo projection via exterior mirror housings and a panoramic sunroof are some of the other key highlights of the eHybrid.
In addition to the traditional R color Lapiz Blue Metallic, the new Silicon Gray Matt can now also be ordered exclusively for the Touareg R eHybrid and the Touareg R-Line.
On the inside, things don’t look any different from the outgoing model, but you get an Active Info Display; a Discover Pro Max navigation system; 45-watt USB-C ports at the front (15-watt previously); 8 speakers; DAB+; dual-zone climate control, and electrically-adjustable and heated front seats. The aforementioned eHybrid gets leather seats and 4-zone climate control.
Driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control with stop & go; Front Assist emergency braking; Lane Assist; Traffic Sign Recognition, and distraction and fatigue detection. Optional systems include Travel Assist; Park Assist Plus with remote control; Trailer Assist, and Night Vision.
In Germany, the Touareg is powered by a 3.0L V6 turbo diesel engine that pumps out 170 kW (231 metric hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft), coupled with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and 4Motion AWD system. The same diesel engine is available with 210 kW (286 metric hp) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft). A 3.0L V6 turbo petrol is also available, of course, offering 250 kW (340 metric hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). This engine too is coupled with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and 4Motion AWD system.
The Touareg R eHybrid 4Motion (previously sold as Touareg R Hybrid), continues to pack a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.0L V6 turbo petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission, offering combined figures of 340 kW (462 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).
As mentioned, VW claims to have enhanced the suspension setup of the new Touareg. A new roof load sensor is closely integrated with the suspension electronics. If a roof load is detected, it allows control systems such as ESC to intervene earlier in order to increase driving stability. And, if there’s no load on the roof, the system allows for even sportier performance, the company said in an official release.
