BMW XM Label Red debuts with a red nose and more horses

I’m just as clueless as to what’s going on at BMW’s design division, but apparently, they’re trying their best to make a difference—whether you like it or not, of course. And, the latest masterpiece from that stable is the XM Label Red. No, not Red Label (tea or whisky) but Label Red. Limited to 500 units globally, the XM Label Red is gonna be available in China, the U.S. and the Middle East, with order books opening on April 28th, 2023.

The exterior of the XM is painted in Frozen Carbon Black metallic, but all the blingy bits of the regular XM are painted in Toronto Red metallic, including the inserts on the standard 21-inch light-alloy wheels. However, those who don’t find that red window outline very tasteful, can spec it in black, as are the Kidney grille surrounds and diffuser elements. That said, if you care about being tasteful, why would you buy an XM anyway? The point of the XM is to be.. well, different, and the Label Red makes it better/worse—depending on the way you look at it.

A similar black & red theme has been carried on to the interior as well. The upper surfaces of the seats have red leather, in addition to red contrast stitching all over the seats. The centre console features a satin carbon fibre applique with red and blue threads. Ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System and the Travel & Comfort System remain standard features, while a 1,475-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System remains an optional extra.

The regular XM—as you might know, is a PHEV with combined output figures of 480 kW (653 metric hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft)—which are of course, way too much for an SUV of this size. However, as mentioned, the XM Label Red is about pushing those controversial limits to the max and then some. Therefore, the 4.4L V8 biturbo motor makes peak figures of 430 kW (585 metric hp) at 5,600 rpm and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque between 1,800 and 5,400 rpm, which are 70 kW (95 metric hp) and 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) more.

While the power output of the electric motor remains 145 kW (197 metric hp), the max torque is now 450 Nm (332 lb-ft)—which is 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) more than in the regular XM, thanks to a patented pre-gearing stage. The nominal torque of the e-motor is gonna be 280 Nm (206.5 lb-ft).

If you add the numbers, the combined figures in the XM Label Red are 575 kW (782 metric hp) and 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 3.8 seconds, which is 0.5 seconds quicker than the regular model.
