As you probably know, the Peugeot 3008 already offers a plug-in hybrid option in addition to regular petrol and diesel powetrain options, while the 5008 offered only petrol and diesel options. Well, now it’s time for both models to get mildy electrified, and inspire their siblings such as 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW and 408 to eventually get mildy electrified too.
The powertrain is a combination of a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder PureTech turbocharged petrol engine and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Here, a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor is integrated into the 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The ICE offers 100 kW (136 metric hp) and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft), while the aforementioned e-motor develops 21 kW (29 metric hp) and 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). The e-motor’s figures are sufficient for tasks such as parking maneuvers and low speed driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
As with any other mild-hybrid system, the e-motor assists the ICE with temporary torque boost requirements, performs brake energy regeneration, and also assists the belt-starter. A tiny lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 898 Wh and an available capacity of 432 Wh is installed underneath the front passenger seat. It comes with an 8-year/160,000 km warranty.
Peugeot says that this mild-hybrid powertrain replaces the regular PureTech 130 EAT8 option. The company also claims that the new option lowers fuel consumption by up to 15%. Compared with the regular petrol option, the mild-hybrid powertrain is claimed to offer average fuel savings of around 1 litre/100 km.
