Mahindra has launched the rear-wheel-drive version of the second-gen Thar for those who seek a more affordable version of the popular off-roader brand. But of course, you won’t be able to go off-roading with this one, but hey, much better than those wannabe SUVs, right? Well, the introductory prices start at INR 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom, Pan India. These prices are gonna be valid for the first 10,000 bookings, post that, there’ll be a price revision. Deliveries are expected to commence from Jan 14, 2023.
Variants | ex-Showroom prices (INR) |
AX (O) RWD diesel MT hard-top | 9.99 lakh |
LX RWD diesel MT hard-top | 10.99 lakh |
LX RWD petrol AT hard-top | 13.49 lakh |
That’s right, you got only three variants to choose from, all hard-top models. There’s no diesel automatic—which I guess is understandable, but for some strange reason, Mahindra is not offering a petrol manual either—which I certainly do not understand.
Visually, the Thar RWD is not gonna look any different compared with the Thar 4×4, but of course, you’re not gonna get the 4×4 badge on the side of the vehicle. As for exterior colors, you get two options: Blazing Bronze and Everest White.
The petrol Thar RWD packs the same engine as the 4×4 model: a 2.0L turbocharged unit (mStallion 150) with 112 kW (152 metric hp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. But for diesel RWD, you’re not getting the mHawk 130, instead, you’ll get a 1.5-litre D117 unit with 87 kW (118 metric hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The diesel RWD gets Electronic Brake Locking Differential as well, while the 4×4 LX models continue to get Advanced Electronic Brake Locking Differential. What’s the difference between advanced and non-advanced BLDs? There’s no explanation for that. But anyway, the mechanical locking diff remains an option on the mHawk 130 (remember, this was offered as standard in both AX OPT and LX trims until Oct 2022). Download the updated brochure here.
