Mike Manley, head of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Jeep brand has reportedly said that the company is planning for a sub 10 lakh mini SUV for India, as well as other emerging markets like China and Brazil.
This planned Jeep SUV will most likely fall under sub 4 metre category, and will take on the likes of Ford Ecosport and other compact SUVs that are currently dominating the market. The company is also looking at a partnership with Tata Motors for engines, transmissions and possibly new platforms.
Manley has reportedly said that the vehicle will be positioned “on top of the Eco Sport” and will be “very close” to the Ford vehicle. He said he is open to “discussions” on exploring “opportunities” with Tata Motors beyond the Ranjangaon joint venture (FCA-Tata) plant that produces vehicles for both the companies.
Jeep made its India entry in August this year with Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, but are pricey due to CBU imports. However, the company will be launching a new SUV Compass soon, which will be the first vehicle manufactured from its JV plant at Ranjangaon. Renegade is also expected to launch in India soon.
