It appears that Stellantis is very much thrilled with its new 48-volt mild-hybrid system that debuted with the Jeep Compass and Renegade models recently. In case you missed the story, the system offers low-speed all-electric maneuvers, thanks to a relatively powerful electric motor integrated with the gearbox. The Alfa Romeo Tonale that debuted just a few days ago, is also offering the same mild-hybrid option. The latest models to join that lineup are the new Fiat 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid.
As mentioned, it’s the same formula here. A FireFly 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is coupled with an electric motor integrated into the 7-speed DCT. The ICE puts out 95 kW (129 metric hp) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque, while the e-motor is rated at 15 kW (20 metric hp) and 55 Nm (40.5 lb-ft). The mild-hybrid system offers functions such as e-Launch (electric-only start-up), e-Creeping (low speed creeping or reverse maneuvers), e-Queueing (stop & go in a traffic jam), and e-Parking, which are fairly self-explanatory.
Also, as you might have noticed already, Fiat has teamed up with (RED) to offer a special trim that contributes to fighting against the pandemic.
Another key highlight for 2022 is the improved Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Attention Assist is a new addition to the 500X Hybrid although previously seen in the Tipo in 2020; besides detecting early signs of driver fatigue, it also sends an acoustic and visual warning to the instrument cluster and recommends the driver to take a break. As for Autonomous Emergency Brake, before it is fully triggered, the system sends an acoustic and visual signal to the instrument cluster, then slightly brakes as a warning. Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assist, Lane Control, Adaptive High Beam, and Blind Spot Assist are also part of the ADAS suite.
