Porsche has commenced testing its new Le Mans hybrid hypercar that is all set to make its race debut in January 2023 at the opening round of the 24 Hours of Daytona. The vehicle will be fielded under the team name Porsche Penske Motorsport. Built around a Multimatic chassis, the new car packs a “large-capacity” twin-turbo V8 that can also run on renewable fuels, meaning a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Under racing conditions, the system output reaches around 500 kW (680 metric hp).
The maximum revs are capped at 10,000 rpm. Also, as per the regulations, the engine must weigh at least 180 kg (397 lbs), including the air supply, exhaust system as well as any peripheral cooling components. The motor-generator unit and control electronics come from Bosch, while the battery pack and recuperation components are supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering. Transmission is supplied by Xtrac.
“We were spoiled for choice with the engine for our LMDh prototype, because the product range offers several promising baseline units,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President, Porsche Motorsport. “We decided on a V8 biturbo, which we feel offers the best combination of performance characteristics, weight and costs,” he added.
As you might know, Toyota and Peugeot are packing a V6 biturbo in their Le Mans hypercars.
