If Sir Alec Issigonis could design the classic Mini again today, the iconic small car would have an electric motor. After all, the original Mini was the result of a 1956 fuel crisis (Suez Crisis); the idea was to develop a tiny vehicle that can sip as little fuel as possible while transporting four occupants and their luggage. And so, it only makes sense to convert some of the classic Minis into electric classic Minis.
Apparently, the idea was born even before the British marque had the Cooper SE in its portfolio. A one-off electric classic Mini was built in 2018 and presented at the New York Auto Show, and the reactions were so positive that folks at the Mini Oxford plant devised a plan to make a corresponding offer available to customers who own a classic Mini. But don’t worry, the conversion can be reverted should you need to, for whatever reason.
The combustion engine is replaced with a 90 kW (122 metric hp) electric motor—drawing juice from a 6.6 kWh battery pack that is estimated to deliver a range of up to 160 km (99 mi). The electrified classic Mini is claimed to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in approximately 9 seconds, should such things interest you. Also, notice that the classic gauge cluster now displays the motor temperature, the selected gear, range and speed.
The bespoke conversion of the classic Mini is currently only available for UK customers. Each converted vehicle is given an individual number, making it unique.
