Hyundai MobED is an eccentric service robot

At the CES 2022 in January, Hyundai’s robotics division is planning to showcase the Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED)—a flexible small mobility platform with a potential for a multitude of applications.

The MobED measures 670 mm long, 600 mm wide, 330 mm high, and weighs about 50 kg (110 lbs). Besides its wheels that can turn independently in any direction, another key feature of this concept is its wheelbase that can expand to 650 mm for optimum stability in high-speed driving and scale down to 450 mm for low-speed maneuvers in more complex environments.

Notice that the platform can also stay perfectly level at an incline. A 2 kWh battery pack enables the MobED to drive for around 4 hours at a max speed of 30 km/h (19 mph). Potential applications include the services industry (deliveries, hospitality), filming, advertising, and maybe even a stroller if you fancy one.

We have developed the MobED platform to overcome the limitations of existing indoor guide and service robots while maximizing its usability in cities by dramatically improving the platform’s overall mobility. We are also looking ahead to assess how potential users of MobED will further expand their needs and use for this type of technology. – Dong Jin Hyun, Head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab
