Hyundai is showcasing the Ioniq Seven—an all-electric SUV concept at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept is built around Hyundai’s E-GMP platform that underpins the production cars such as the Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 and of course, the Genesis GV60 as well. However, the Ioniq Seven is still a wacky concept and is a bit far from being ready for production.
The Ioniq Seven concept sports a clean and minimal styling with Parametric Pixel lights that we’ve been seeing in the latest Hyundai concepts such as the 45 (which subsequently became Ioniq 5), Prophecy, and most recently the Pony hatchback and Grandeur EV restomod. One of the interesting aspects of the Seven is its wheels—which according to Hyundai feature integrated Active Air Flaps—which deploy or retract depending on brake-cooling or low-drag requirements. The concept boasts a wheelbase of 3.2 meters.
The Seven’s interior design suggests that the vehicle is quite far from being ready for production; not that the exterior is. There’s a curved bench seat in the rear, and there are only two independent seats that can swivel around. And, notice that there’s no traditional steering wheel as we know it, and that is because there’s isn’t one. Instead, the driver gets a retractable control stick that can be hidden away when not in use. Which also suggests that the vehicle is capable of driving autonomously.
An integrated mini fridge, shoe-care compartments, Hygiene Airflow System, and UVC Sterilization are some of the other key highlights inside the cabin. And of course, as with most of the futuristic concepts out there, the Seven too boasts eco-friendly and recycled materials inside. The exterior paint is apparently a bio-paint.
UVC Sterilization activates once the vehicle is vacated from its passengers. The control stick, first-row storage drawer and speakers pop up. Then, integrated sanitizing UVC lights help clean the living space of bacteria and viruses. In addition, there are sanitizing storage compartments in the bench and Smart Hub console for personal belongings.
Technical details don’t matter at this stage, but Hyundai is targeting a range of over 300 miles (483+ km).
