Mazda has revealed the first-ever CX-50 crossover for the North American markets, with production scheduled to commence in January 2022, followed by the sales launch later in the year. The CX-50 will be the first Mazda vehicle to be produced at the brand new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
As with the latest Mazda models, the CX-50 too sports a clean and elegant styling—combining the brand’s Kodo design language with rugged adventure bits. I think the positioning of those orange running lights/turn signals on the front bumper kinda adds to the adventure drama. The CX-50 looks even more dramatic in the new Zircon Sand exterior paint which offers more contrast with the black elements. We don’t have the exact dimensions of the vehicle at the moment, but we’re told that the CX-50 is slightly larger than the CX-5.
The cockpit design is just as clean as the exterior. The instrument cluster is flanked by air vents for the driver, while a small central air vent is positioned close to the front passenger, which kinda looks odd but discreet. Unless told, your attention is probably not drawn towards that central air vent. A terracotta color theme will be offered as an option. The CX-50 features a large panoramic moonroof which is a first for Mazda.
As for the juicy bits of the story, the CX-50 will offer a 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine options from the Skyactiv-G family. Transmission will be a 6-speed automatic and Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel-drive system comes standard. The SUV will also offer Mazda Intelligent Drive Select or Mi-Drive, with modes to enhance off-road and sporty driving.
