Remember the Toyota Aygo X prologue concept that we saw earlier this year? Well, it has now taken the production form and is all set to compete in the European A-segment, against the likes of cars such as Renault Twingo, Fiat 500, Peugeot 108, VW Up! and Suzuki Ignis, just to name a few. This tiny contraption has already been listed on Toyota’s official European market websites, but the pricing is yet to be announced.
The production model loses the ‘prologue’ suffix but retains most of the styling elements, including the wheel arch cladding and the dual-tone paint scheme. However, it loses the continuous light band at the front and rear, which I think should’ve been retained. But anyway, the Aygo X offers four color themes: Cardamom (matt green), Chilli (red paint with blue metallic flakes), Ginger (beige) and Juniper (blue with subtle reddish undertones). The Cardamom featured in the photos here is a limited edition—available for the first six months—featuring orange accents and 18-inch matte black alloy wheels. That retractable canvas top is an optional feature. And, for those who are wondering, the Aygo X was designed and developed at the Toyota European Design and Development, near Nice, France.
Unlike the previous Aygo which is a joint venture product, the Aygo X sits on the GA-B platform which also underpins the 4th gen Yaris hatchback. As a result, the Aygo X has grown in dimensions compared with the Aygo, measuring 3,700 mm long (+235 mm), 1,740 mm wide (+125 mm) and 1,510 mm tall (+50 mm). The wheelbase is up by 90 mm to 2,430 mm. Cargo capacity is claimed to be up by 60-litres to 231-litres.
The cockpit looks just as funky as the exterior with lots of curves and contrast touches. I’m not entirely sure if the exposed metal on the doors is for the cool factor or simply cost cutting; I’ll let you decide on that. But anyway, features include a 9-inch central touchscreen, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a JBL 4-speaker audio system with a 300-watt amplifier and a 200 mm subwoofer.
As for the safety and ADAS, the Toyota Safety Sense suite comes standard, which includes Pre-Collision System, day and night Pedestrian Detection, daytime Cyclist Detection, Collision Mitigation Support, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist and Emergency Steering Assist.
Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, the Aygo X will be powered by a 1.0-litre (998 cc) 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (1KR-FE), the same one that powers the outgoing model, but is said to have been improved to meet European regulations. Output figures are not yet disclosed, but will most likely remain the same: 53 kW (72 metric hp) and 93 Nm (69 lb-ft). Depending on the market, the transmission will be a 5-speed manual or a CVT.
