New 5.5L V8, 670 bhp, 8-DCT
Chevrolet has unwrapped the new Z06, more than two years after the debut of the first-ever mid-engined C8 Corvette. Highlights include more sporty looks, a standard reconfigurable rear spoiler, model-specific suspension tuning, and a new engine and transmission combo. Pricing is yet to be announced but the new Z06 will go on sale in summer 2022 as a 2023 model. It’ll also be available in the right-hand drive configuration for global markets.
The standard Z06 features a front splitter and a unique rear spoiler, which includes an installable fixed wickerbill—a small, vertical tab at the edge of the spoiler that is claimed to significantly increase downforce, with 165.6 kg (365 lbs) more at 299 km/h (186 mph). Those who are not satisfied with the standard setup can go for the optional carbon fibre aero package that includes a larger front splitter, front canards/dive planes, and a large rear wing and underbody aero strakes for max downforce.
For those who want to spend more, a Z07 Performance Package is also available that includes the aforementioned carbon fibre aero package, unique suspension tuning with specific Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 calibrations, Michelin Sport Cup 2 R ZP tires developed specifically for the Z06, optional carbon fibre wheels which offer 18.6 kg (41 lbs) reduction in unsprung mass, and Brembo carbon ceramic brake system with large rotors measuring 15.7-inch at the front and 15.4-inch at the rear. Standard Brembo rotors measure 14.6-inch at the front and 15-inch at the rear. The Z06 has 6-piston front calipers as opposed to 4-piston calipers on the Stingray. The Z07 package is claimed to offer 333 kg (734 lbs) of downforce at 299 km/h (186 mph).
“Virtually every component that distinguishes the Z06 was developed to support or enhance its capability. By leveraging the mid-engine architecture’s inherent advantages, we are able to achieve 6% more downforce than a 7th-gen ZR1 at 8% lower drag,” said Tadge Juechter, Executive Chief Engineer, Corvette.
The new Z06 retains the SLA-type front and rear suspension setup of the Corvette Stingray, but uniquely calibrated for its higher performance capabilities, Chevy said. Magnetic Selective Ride Control 4.0 is standard and can be adjusted for comfort or maximum track performance via the Drive Mode Selector.
For the cockpit, the new Z06 offers three seat choices and six seatbelt options; carbon fibre packages, and Stealth Aluminum options.
The 2023 Z06 is powered by a new 5.5L naturally aspirated V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft that enables the engine to rev up to 8,600 rpm. Highlights include forged aluminum pistons and forged titanium connecting rods, and a six-stage dry-sump oiling system with individual crank bay scavenging. The official output figures are 500 kW (680 metric hp/670 bhp) at 8,400 rpm and 623 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque at 6,300 rpm. An 8-speed DCT drives the rear wheels. The exhaust note is claimed to be rich and “unlike anything ever heard from a Corvette”.
