There’s good news and bad news for the Americans who were looking to buy the J300-series Land Cruiser but were disappointed to learn that it’s not gonna reach the American shores. The good news is that the new Land Cruiser is indeed coming to America, but the bad news is that those buyers will need to spend more money a lot more money, since the new Land Cruiser is coming with Lexus badges and of course, a gigantic grille.
That’s right, the 4th generation Lexus LX made its debut in the Middle East and is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in early 2022. But don’t worry, the new LX has been confirmed for the American market as well.
The signature spindle grille has been made even larger—as if it wasn’t large already. In the JDM-exclusive OffRoad trim, the grille is painted in a dark gray metallic. The OffRoad trim also gets standard three differential locks (front, center and rear), 18-inch off-road tires wrapped to matte gray-painted wheels, and black painted wheel arch moldings. Depending on the trim, the LX gets up to 22-inch wheels.
Built on the GA-F derivative of the TNGA platform, the new LX is claimed to be 200 kg (441 lbs) lighter compared with its predecessor. And thanks to the latest welding technology, the chassis is claimed to be 20% more rigid compared with its predecessor. While high-tensile steel dominates the construction, the hood, door panels and roof have been made of aluminum. As for suspension, the new LX gets something called Active Height Control (AHC), which as the name suggests, allows the ride height to be adjusted as per the driving environment and depending on the selected drive mode. Further off-roading credentials include up to 700 mm of water wading capability.
The Multi-Terrain Select offers six modes—Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock. There’s also something called the Back Underfloor View, which displays the area around the rear wheels, helping the driver understand the position of obstacles at the rear. The steering is electrically powered (EPS) for the first time.
Other key highlights include fingerprint-authentication push-start; dual display (12.3-inch upper and 7-inch lower touchscreens); Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity; climate control; independent rear seats in the Executive trim where the seats can be reclined up to 48 degrees; and a 10-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System. Optional equipment includes a 25-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and a rear entertainment system with touch displays. Lexus Safety System+ suite of ADAS comes standard.
Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, the 2022 Lexus LX is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine (V35A-FTS) that pumps out 305 kW (415 metric hp) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft), paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a transfer case. Depending on the market, the LX might offer a 3.3L V6 twin-turbo diesel as well.
