Toyota has launched the Corolla Cross in Japan with prices starting at JPY 1,999,000 (US$ 18,192 or INR 13.38 lakh). The crossover sports a unique and rather stylish front fascia compared with the Thai-spec Corolla Cross and North American-spec Corolla Cross.
Toyota has set a monthly sales target of 4,400 units. And, notice that unlike in the aforementioned two markets, the Japanese market gets E-Four AWD variants that come with an additional rear e-motor.
As is the tradition with Japanese-spec Corolla models, the Corolla Cross too sports a ‘C’ motif on its front fascia as opposed to the traditional T badge. Speaking of the front fascia, the headlight detailing is different compared with the Corolla Cross sold elsewhere, and so is the grille situation. Thanks to the wheel design, the side profile looks fairly unique too, and at the rear, the taillights have a different detailing, and so is the bumper.
Inside, the dashboard design remains unchanged, unsurprisingly. All variants come with the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense suite of ADAS as standard. An accessory power outlet (AC 100-volt/1,500-watt) and an Emergency Power Supply Mode are available on hybrid versions.
Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, the regular petrol variants are powered by a 1.8-litre (1,798 cc) 4-cylinder 2ZR-FAE engine, developing 103 kW (140 metric hp) at 6,200 rpm and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque at 3,900 rpm, paired with a CVT.
The petrol-electric hybrid variants combine a 1.8-litre (1,798 cc) 4-cylinder 2ZR-FXE engine and an electric motor. The ICE develops 72 kW (98 metric hp) at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm (105 lb-ft) of torque at 3,600 rpm. The e-motor offers 53 kW (72 metric hp) and 163 Nm (120 lb-ft) of torque. The system output, however, is 90 kW (122 metric hp). Transmission here is an e-CVT. The E-Four AWD variants get an additional teenie-weenie e-motor at the rear, offering 5.3 kW (7.2 metric hp) and 55 Nm (40.5 lb-ft). Download the spec-sheet here (Japanese).
