Subaru has taken the wraps off the 5th generation WRX, scheduled to go on sale in America in early 2022. Highlights of the 2022 model include a new platform, a 2.4L Boxer engine, AWD, electric power steering, track-tuned suspension setup, and a new GT trim with electronically controlled dampers.

The Subaru Global Platform upon which the 2022 WRX is built, is claimed to deliver a substantial upgrade in ride and handling performance, thanks to increased chassis stiffness and low center of gravity. Overall torsional rigidity is up by 28% and suspension mounting point rigidity is up by 75%, the company said.

Styling has been subtly sharpened-up and is in line with the latest Subaru models. There are new LED headlights, a broader hood scoop, new taillights, muscular rear haunches, and plastic cladding on the wheel arches. The front fenders are now made of aluminum, which are claimed to save 2.26 kg (5 lbs). Functional aerodynamic improvements include an air outlet at the trailing edge of the front wheel arches, another outlet on either end of the rear bumper, and a front underbody cover with an aerodynamic texture. As standard, the new WRX rides on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped with summer performance tires, while an 18-inch option is also available.

The new GT trim comes with electronically controlled dampers that can vary the characteristics depending on Comfort, Normal, or Sport mode. The Drive Mode Select offers additional options to configure steering feel, damper settings, SI-Drive settings, and more.

The refreshed cabin features red contrast stitching, carbon fibre-like accents, a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 11.6-inch central touchscreen, Navigation by TomTom, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, and an optional 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The GT trim gets Recaro front seats with 8-way power-adjustability for the driver.

ADAS include Lane Departure Prevention, Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, and Pre-Collision Braking System. The GT trim gets Automatic Emergency Steering which is optional on other trims. Passive safety includes 7 airbags.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, the 2022 WRX is powered by a 2.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged Boxer engine that pumps out 202 kW (275 metric hp/271 bhp) at 5,600 rpm and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque between 2,000 and 5,200 rpm. The engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission featuring optimized gear ratios. Those who don’t want a three-pedal setup, can go for a CVT (billed as Subaru Performance Transmission) option that offers an 8-speed simulated manual mode with paddle shifters. All-wheel-drive and Active Torque Vectoring is standard on all WRX models.
