Genesis had revealed a sporty version of the G80 just over a month ago, but the details were retained for another day. Well, the day has finally arrived and sadly, there aren’t many things to talk about. That said, the G80 Sport is not all about sporty looks. Which means, we do have something to talk about.
Alright then, let’s cut the foreplay and get to it. The first thing the G80 Sport boasts is a rear-wheel steering system. At speeds lower than 60 km/h (37 mph), the wheels rotate 3.5° in the opposite direction to the front wheels, and at speeds above 60 km/h, the wheels rotate 2° in the same direction as the front wheels.
The G80 Sport also gets a sporty tuning for its suspension system which can change its characteristics depending on the selected driving mode. Genesis has thrown in a track-focused Sport+ mode as well, which according to the company, “overwhelms with more powerful tuning”.
The rest of the things will remain the same, including the powertrains. For starters, there’s a 2.5L 4-cylinder turbo petrol with 224 kW (304 metric hp) and 422 Nm (311 lb-ft) of torque. Those who want more can go for a 3.5L V6 turbo petrol with 279 kW (380 metric hp) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. There’s even a 2.2L 4-cylinder diesel engine on offer with 154 kW (210 metric hp) and 441 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque.
All three engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox that drives the rear wheels as standard. AWD system is optional.
