Ford has revealed a Puma-based hybrid rally car that will compete in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) from 2022 with M-Sport Ford World Rally Team. Named Puma Rally1, the rally car debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
The Puma Rally1 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.6-litre EcoBoost (turbocharged) petrol engine with a 100 kW (136 metric hp) electric motor and 3.9 kWh battery pack. M-Sport drivers Adrien Fourmaux and Matthew Wilson took the rally car up the famous Goodwood hill.
The new era of WRC cars is one of the biggest technological advancements in WRC to date. The introduction of the hybrid means that the cars will be more powerful than ever whilst also directly reflecting the powertrains within their road-going counterparts. The switch to Puma is very exciting with the name already having rally heritage, the car looks fantastic and I cannot wait to see it at the start line of the famous Monte Carlo Rally in early 2022. — Malcolm Wilson, Managing Director, M-Sport.
Ford is aiming for a 100% electrified lineup (all-electric or PHEV) in Europe by mid-2026, before moving to an all-electric lineup by 2030.
