The design team led by Gerry McGovern did a pretty good job with the second-gen Land Rover Defender; in its understated yet serious looks, you can see the lineage fairly easily without the need for any explanation. However, if you’re not into such subtlety, Brabus’ Startech division has a solution that makes the Defender look Stormtrooper-ish-ly funny.
The body kit components made of ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) include a three-piece spoiler for the front bumper, a rear roof spoiler, and a tailgate cover that replaces the spare wheel. The Union Jack graphics on the cover is available in color as well. The Startech division also offers a painting service where the ex-factory matt black or silver bodywork components can be painted in body color or in a contrasting color. Rounding off the Startech looks are gigantic 23-inch wheels.
In order to compensate for those wheels, the engineers had to develop a special control module for the standard air suspension just so that the ride won’t be uncomfortable. When in on-road mode, the Defender rides about 35 mm lower than in the production configuration.
Startech also offers interior customization options, which in this example, look rather tasteful. Custom components available in many colors replace the standard silver aluminum panels on the door trim, center console and on dashboard. A set of anodized bolts that replace the production bolts are also available in red, blue or black.
