The 2022 Acura MDX Type S will make its public debut as a towing vehicle for one of the two race-prepped TLX Type S sedans that’ll climb Pikes Peak on June 27, 2021. The MDX is the first Acura SUV to get a high-performance Type S variant.
Some of the modifications on the race-prepped TLX Type S include a larger turbocharger to deliver consistent boost even at high altitudes that reach more than 14,000 feet at the summit; additional cooling for the engine, and software tweaks for the engine, transmission and SH-AWD system. Also, more than 272 kg (600 lbs) of weight has been cut down by throwing out most of the car interior and using lightweight components including a carbon fibre hood.
Chassis modifications include a race-prepped suspension with a 1-inch drop in ride height, race-compound brake pads with additional brake cooling and temperature monitoring, and HRE 19-inch lightweight race wheels shod with Pirelli slicks.
The 2022 Acura MDX Type S is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged V6 that pumps out 265 kW (360 metric hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. Brembo front brakes, double-wishbone front suspension, and an exclusive Sport+ driving mode are also the key highlights of the MDX Type S.
