The BMW X3 and X4 models have received a mid-cycle refresh and are scheduled to make their public debut at the Chengdu Motor Show in China (27 August to 5 September) and IAA in Munich (7 to 12 September). The updates include styling revisions, onboard technology, and an electrified powertrain for each variant.
The styling revisions make the car look a li’l bit sharper with new 10 mm slimmer LED headlights, new LED taillights, revised front & rear bumpers, and new wheel designs. Although the kidney grille is now larger, thankfully, it is not disproportionately huge. The X4 gets adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function as standard; Laser light is optional. The crossovers ride on 19-inch wheels as standard, while up to 21-inch wheels can be found in the options list. The M sports brakes with blue or red brake calipers are part of the M sports package. The adaptive M sports suspension can also be found in the options list.
Highlights of the refreshed cabin include the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus which gets a 10.25-inch central touchscreen and a 5.1-inch MID. There’s of course, the optional Live Cockpit Professional with two 12.3-inch displays. Also, the Amazon Alexa can be installed in the vehicle via the My BMW app. A 3-zone climate control also comes standard, as are sports seats with heating function. Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, both the X3 and X4 are available in petrol and diesel powertrains, all coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system except for the xDrive30e which is a plug-in hybrid.
The X3 is available in xDrive20i (184 hp 2.0L), xDrive30i (245 hp 2.0L), M40i (360 hp 3.0L inline-6), xDrive30e (see below), xDrive20d (190 hp 2.0L), xDrive30d (286 hp 3.0L inline-6), and M40d (340 hp 3.0L inline-6).
The xDrive30e featured in the photos here, is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, combined with an electric motor that is integrated into an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The system output is 215 kW (292 metric hp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft). This variant claims a pure electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi).
The X4 on the other side is available in xDrive20i (184 hp 2.0L), xDrive30i (245 hp 2.0L), M40i (360 hp 3.0L inline-6), xDrive20d (190 hp 2.0L), xDrive30d (286 hp 3.0L inline-6), and M40d (340 hp 3.0L inline-6). That’s right, there’s no PHEV option for the X4.
Interestingly, the M40 variants regardless of petrol or diesel powertrain, claim a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 4.9 seconds in both the X3 and X4. Download the spec sheet here.
