BMW is baking a 2-door Coupé version of the second-gen 2 Series, and the test mules suggest that it has been spared from the grille monstrosity. It appears that only the 1 and 2 Series models will be spared and models higher up the spectrum are inevitable from being “grilled”. That said, let’s hope that the Z4 and 8 Series will remain “safe” as well.
While the Gran Coupé models use the Mini-based UKL2 platform with transverse engines, the 2-door models including the M2, are expected to retain the rear-wheel-drive layout with longitudinal engines. The new Coupe according to reports, will sit on a CLAR architecture that has been customized (shortened) specifically for the car.
The powertrains are expected to be coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
