The Chinese market has some really interesting, exclusive cars that make you a bit jealous and wonder why they’re not on sale in other parts of the planet. One such car is the second generation Hyundai Mistra, a mid-size sedan that slots between the Elantra and Sonata. The Mistra is available in petrol and all-electric variants, with prices starting at CNY 133,800 (INR 15.2 lakh or US$ 20,500).
The 2021 Mistra debuted at the 2020 Guangzhou Auto Show as a China-exclusive model. It adopts the brand’s latest design language with a dual lamp set-up on the front fascia similar to those on the second-gen Creta SUV. The side profile looks rather bland, while the rear-end has a continuous taillight signature. The electric version distinguishes itself with a closed-off front grille, different bumper designs, and of course, unique 17-inch wheels. The petrol versions ride on 18-inch wheels.
As for the dimensions, the petrol Mistra measures 4,780 long, 1,815 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall, while the Mistra EV is longer and taller by 35 mm and 10 mm, respectively. The wheelbase, however, remains the same at 2,770 mm.
The cabin looks equally contemporary and the features list depending on the trim includes a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch central infotainment system, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat, rear AC vents, and Hyundai SmartSense suite of active safety and driver assistance systems.
The petrol Mistra offers two engines: a 1.8L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder unit with 104.8 kW (142 metric hp) and 175.5 Nm (129.5 lb-ft) of torque, paired with a CVT, and a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder unit with 125 kW (170 metric hp) and 253 Nm (186.6 lb-ft) of torque, paired with a 7-speed DCT.
The Mistra EV starts at CNY 178,800 (INR 20.4 lakh or US$ 27,410). It has a single electric motor at the front, offering a maximum of 135 kW (183.5 metric hp) at 14,000 rpm and 310 Nm (228.6 lb-ft) of torque. The EV is claimed to do a top speed of 165 km/h (102.5 mph). The 56.5 kWh battery pack is claimed to offer an NEDC cruising range of up to 520 km (323 mi).
