LA-based EV startup Canoo has revealed its take on an all-electric pickup truck, which the company says will open for preorders in Q2 2021, with deliveries beginning as early as 2023. It is built on the same, modular, skateboard platform as the electric minivan that debuted in 2019.
The design too follows the same, minimalistic philosophy as the minivan to prioritize the cabin and bed space. In fact, the pickup truck simply looks like a jacked-up version of the minivan with the rear half of its body chopped off, and that’s probably the idea to showcase the versatility of the platform.
The pickup truck truly is modular with its extendable front worktable with power outlets; flip-down side tables; bed that can extend from 6-ft to 8-ft long; dividers in the bed to properly organize stuff and keep them secure; and a sidestep that doubles as another hidden storage space. Also, the truck can accommodate a variety of camper shells for different use cases.
Being an electric vehicle on a skateboard platform, the Canoo pickup truck offers acres of space inside, not only for two people but also to store some more of their stuff if they run out of external storage spaces. Canoo says that two additional seats can be added at the rear if necessary.
Traditional EV platforms have power units, shock towers and mechanical steering columns that protrude into the vehicle and take up space. By incorporating steer-by-wire and other space-saving technologies, Canoo’s thin platform, with no need for an engine compartment, allows the company to offer a flatbed size comparable to America’s best-selling pickup truck on a smaller footprint.
The pickup truck will be available in dual motor or single rear motor configurations. The dual-motor AWD is claimed to offer up to 448 kW (600 bhp) and 746 Nm (550 lb-ft) of torque. The vehicle payload capacity is claimed to be 816 kg (1,800 lbs). Canoo didn’t disclose the size of the battery pack, but it claims a range of over 322 km (200+ mi).
Full specifications are expected to be revealed closer to its production date. In the meantime, enjoy the following short video and some more photos –
