A true Safari or just a Harrier with an extra row?
Tata Motors has fully revealed the new Safari, including its trim details and technical specifications. However, in true Tata Motors’ fashion, the price announcement has been kept for a later date. In the meantime, here are all the other details that you might want to know.
The Safari will be available in XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ and XZ+ trims. Depending on the trim, exterior features include Xenon projector headlights, LED running lights, rain-sensing wipers, panoramic sunroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels. There are only three colors to pick from: Royale Blue, Orcus White and Daytona Grey.
The cabin looks no different compared to that of the Harrier, except for, of course, the 3rd-row seats. The Safari will be available in 6- or 7-seater configurations; the latter will feature a bench seat for the second row. Depending on the trim, features in the cabin include an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, iRA connected car tech, 9-speaker JBL audio system, 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, tilt & telescopic steering, 7-inch MID, auto AC, cruise control and more. As for safety features, the SUV gets two front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Hill Hold Control, Traction Control, Roll Over Mitigation, disc brakes at all four corners, and rear parking sensors as standard across all trims. The higher trims get more features such as front fog lamps with cornering function, Hill Descent Control, TPMS, and 6 airbags. More info in the brochure attached above.
Powering the Safari is the same Fiat-sourced diesel engine that powers the Harrier. The 2.0-litre (1,956 cc) 4-cylinder turbocharged unit develops 125 kW (170 metric hp) at 3,750 rpm and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750-2,500 rpm. The engine can be paired with either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearboxes that drive the front wheels. No AWD on offer, meaning, you can only go on urban safaris until further notice.
Last but not the least, the Safari measures 4,661 mm long, 1,894 mm wide (without mirrors) and 1,786 mm high. It boasts a wheelbase of 2,741 mm.
