That’s right. The Porsche Taycan rear-wheel-drive variant which drifted into Guinness World Records not too long ago, officially joins the Taycan line-up for sale. In fact, the RWD variant went on sale in China in July 2020 itself, but for the rest of the world, it is now official. With that, the Taycan now has four main variants — 4S, Turbo, Turbo S, and of course, the RWD.
In terms of the looks, the RWD doesn’t look any different compared to the rest of the aforementioned variants. Perhaps, the only distinguishing factors are those aerodynamically optimized 19-inch wheels and black anodized brake calipers. Other than that, there’s no RWD badge or anything as such; things have been kept rather discreet. LED headlights come standard.
In the cabin, the Taycan gets partial leather upholstery as standard and so are the front comfort seats with 8-way electrical adjustment. Other features include a 10.9-inch infotainment display, an optional display for the front passenger, and optional color HUD. The three-chamber adaptive air suspension is optional as well.
The permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle develops 300 kW (408 metric hp) and 345 Nm (254 lb-ft) of torque with the standard 79.2 kWh Performance Battery, and 350 kW (476 metric hp) and 357 Nm (263 lb-ft) of torque with the optional 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus. Remember, those power figures are in overboost mode with Launch Control. The nominal power is 240 kW (326 metric hp) and 280 kW (381 metric hp), respectively. Regardless of its battery pack, the Taycan RWD is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph).
The claimed ranges for those two batteries as per WLTP are up to 431 km (267 mi) and up to 484 km (300 mi), respectively.
The entry-level model doesn’t get that fancy swipe-motorized charging port contraption. Anyway, the standard 79.2 kWh battery pack’s maximum charging capacity is up to 225 kW while the optional 93.4 kWh pack boasts a max charging capacity of up to 270 kW. If found a fast-charging station, both batteries can be charged from 5 to 80% SoC in 22.5 minutes. A 22 kW onboard charger can also be found in the options list.
The RWD Taycans are expected at Porsche dealerships in the middle of March 2021. Prices in Germany start at €83,520 and £70,690 in the UK (prices include VAT).
