Renault 5 to return as a retro-modern EV

Renault-5-Concept

A future Honda e competitor?

By 2025, Renault wants to have 14 core models in its portfolio, with new models offering electric or hybrid options. Of 14, 7 will be full-electric and 7 will be in the C- or D-segment in Europe. Renault didn’t share much details on the same, but we have the Renault 5 concept to take a look at for now.

I think it’s safe to assume that Renault 5 will be a pure-electric model and will go against the Honda e in Europe. Its styling is a modern interpretation of the original Renault 5 hatchback (1972-1996), with a subtle retro flair. There are some cool details such as the fog lamp surrounds doubling as running lights, bonnet air intake hiding the charging port, and the taillights with discreet aero flaps. The offset positioning of the ‘5’ logo at the rear is a nod to the original hatchback.

The cabin features futuristic seats with illuminated headrest edges, and a translucent digital driver display. As mentioned, no technical specifications are available at the moment, but the 5 will most likely be an EV only model.

The design of the Renault 5 Prototype is based on the R5, cult model of our heritage. This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive. – Gilles Vidal, Renault Design Director
