McLaren Artura hybrid supercar will debut in 2021

After the P1 and Speedtail, McLaren is working on its third hybrid offering — Artura, expected to debut sometime in the first half of 2021. McLaren says that the Artura will be the brand’s first “High-Performance Hybrid” series production supercar. Not completely sure what that means, but the company says that the Artura will be built on an all-new platform optimized for electrification.

Looks like McLaren is talking about a new carbon fibre tub specifically designed for electrified supercars it revealed a couple of months ago. As we know already, one disadvantage of hybridization is that the hybrid components add weight, but McLaren says that the additional weight has been offset by the application of weight-saving technologies throughout the chassis, body and powertrain.

Unlike the V8 engines the previous two hybrid cars had, the Artura will get a new, compact twin-turbo V6 that’ll be combined with an electric motor. McLaren says that the powertrain will offer improved torque response at low engine speeds. The Artura can also run on electric power alone for short distances.

Every element of the Artura is all-new — from the platform architecture and every part of the High-Performance Hybrid powertrain, to the exterior body, interior and cutting-edge driver interface — but it draws on decades of McLaren experience in pioneering super-lightweight race and road car technologies to bring all of our expertise in electrification to the supercar class. — Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive
