After the Sportback, the facelifted Audi Q5 lineup is now joined by the SQ5 facelift. It’ll go on sale in Germany and other European markets during the first quarter of 2021, with prices starting at €68,138 in Germany (including 16% VAT).
The updated SQ5 benefits from all the technological updates on the Q5 facelift, including the OLED rear lights. LED headlights come standard while the Matrix LED units with automatic high beam and dynamic turn signals are an option. As standard, the car rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels, while there’s an option for 21-inch wheels. The front discs measure 375 mm, gripped with 6-piston aluminum calipers; the calipers can be painted red as an option.
The S sport suspension with damper control lowers the body by 30 mm (1.2-inch) compared with the regular Q5. The optional adaptive air suspension with S-specific tuning adds an extra ‘allroad’ mode to the Audi drive select dynamic handling system.
There are up to 9 exterior colors to choose from. The black styling package, which adds sporty accents, is available in the options list.
The cabin has been spiced up with illuminated aluminum door sills; electrically-adjustable sport seats with embossed S logos; and brushed aluminum inlays. As for other materials, the Alcantara is replaced with a new Dinamica microfiber material that consists mainly of recycled plastics. A fine Nappa leather with a rhombus pattern in magma red can also be found in the options list.
Other features have been carried over from the regular model, such as the optional 12.3-inch driver display and a 10.1-inch MMI touch display.
Moving on to the business end of the story, the 3.0-litre V6 TDI motor with an electric-powered compressor (EPC) pumps out 251 kW (341 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Compared to the outgoing model, there’s about 6 hp less. It is most likely to do with complying with emission regulations. The SQ5 uses VW Group’s twin-dosing technology with two catalytic converters to cut down emissions. As a result, an actuator is fitted in the exhaust system to enhance the V6 sound.
Anyway, the crossover is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). An 8-speed automatic gearbox drives all four wheels. By default, the quattro AWD system distributes torque between the front and rear axle in a 40:60 ratio.
The SQ5 TDI will be built in Mexico.
