The second generation BMW 4 Series Coupe has now got a Convertible sibling with a fabric softtop, which according to BMW, is around 40% lighter than the predecessor car’s (F33) retractable hardtop.
At the same time, its levels of acoustic and thermal comfort are claimed to be far superior to a conventional softtop. The opening and closing process is initiated via pressing and holding a button on the centre console and takes around 18 seconds. Once the roof is closed, the side windows are automatically raised. The roof can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). If opted for the Comfort Access, the roof can also be operated remotely.
When driving with the top down, the boot can hold 300 litres of luggage — an increase of 80 litres. And when the roof is closed, the softtop compartment’s variable flap can be manually adjusted to increase the boot capacity to 385 litres — 15 litres more than in the predecessor.
Just for comparison, the new 420i Convertible weighs 1,690 kg (3,726 lbs) while the 420i Coupé weighs 1,525 kg (3,362 lbs). The weight difference is more or less the same between various 4 Series Convertible and Coupe models. The Convertible always weighs more due to stiffer body structure and additional convertible-specific bracing. The open-top model also gets a rollover protection system that consists of two protective bars made from high-strength aluminium and are installed behind the rear-seat head restraints.
At launch, there’ll be 420i (2.0L), 430i (2.0L), M440i xDrive (3.0L) and 420d (2.0L) variants. The 430d (3.0L) will join the lineup in July 2021 and the M440d xDrive in November 2021.
The powerful petrol variant is, of course, the M440i xDrive, packing a 3.0L (2,998 cc) in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged unit with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system under the hood, pumping out 374 hp (275 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. It is claimed to sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
On the diesel side, the M440d xDrive also packs a 3.0L (2,993 cc) in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged unit with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system under the hood, pumping out 340 hp (250 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. This one is claimed to take 5.1 seconds to sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph). Here too, the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
