Hyundai has announced that the ‘Ioniq‘, which is currently a Prius rival, will transform into a dedicated sub-brand for battery electric vehicles. This move “is in response to fast-growing market demand and to accelerate Hyundai’s plan to lead the global EV market,” the company said.
Even and Odd
Hyundai will be launching a range of numerically named EVs under the new sub-brand, with the even numbers used for sedans and the odd numbers for SUVs.
The first model under the Ioniq brand will be the Ioniq 5 mid-size crossover that is expected to debut in early 2021. It’ll be based on the 45 concept that we saw at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Ioniq 5 will be followed by Ioniq 6 sedan in 2022, which will be based on the Prophecy concept that we saw in March this year. The Ioniq 7 will be a large SUV that’ll join the lineup in 2024.
Hyundai celebrated the launch of the Ioniq sub-brand by turning the London Eye into a giant letter “Q” with lights.
All these Ioniq brand models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), that will enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range, Hyundai said. Apparently, the dedicated EV platform will enable features such as highly adjustable seats and glove box designed as drawers.
