As we all know, the typical way of distinguishing an EV or a PHEV from their ICE-powered counterparts is by slapping on some blue accents or blue badges. As we also know, the “typical” can sometimes be boring. Which is why Opel has come up with a slightly different way of letting others know that the Grandland X they’re seeing is a PHEV. More specifically, when it is driving in pure electric mode.
A blue light can be seen through the windshield; it has been integrated just underneath the interior mirror. When it glows blue, it is understood that the combustion engine is taking a break. The Grandland X offers a driver selectable EV mode.
Opel says that the blue light also makes things easy for law enforcement officers when the Grandland X drives into areas where only e-vehicles are permitted, for example. In this case, one glance is enough to see that the vehicle is driving purely electrically.
The Grandland X PHEV is available in both FWD and AWD variants. The Hybrid4 AWD with a 1.6L petrol engine and two electric motors offers a system output of up to 221 kW (300 hp), while the FWD (single e-motor) with a system output of 165 kW (224 hp) is not bad either.
