The new Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid is now on sale in Japan with prices starting at JPY 4,690,000 (USD 43,411 or INR 32,77,540). It is available in G, G ‘Z’, and Black Tone trims, with the latter featuring a sporty appeal. All three trims come with E-Four AWD system.

The range topping Black Tone trim is available in five dual-tone combinations with Attitude Black Mica for the lower body, roof, and door mirrors. The crossover rides on 19-inch machine-cut aluminum wheels with black accents.
There’s no shortage of creature comforts on the inside, which includes a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, heated front seats, seat heaters for outer rear seats, and Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety and driver assistance systems.
The RAV4 also comes with a 1,500 W (AC 100 V) power supply outlet as standard equipment, which comes handy during blackouts and other emergencies, and for outdoor leisure activities as well.
The THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II) in the RAV4 PHEV combines a 2.5-litre (2,487 cc) 4-cylinder petrol engine (A25A-FXS) and two electric motors, forming the E-Four AWD system. The ICE produces 130 kW (177 hp) at 6000 rpm and 219 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque at 3600 rpm. The front electric motor develops 134 kW (182 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque while the rear electric motor pumps out a decent 40 kW (54 hp) and 121 Nm (89 lb-ft) of torque.
The total system output, however, is claimed to be 225 kW (306 hp). Transmission is an eCVT.
The RAV4 PHEV packs a fairly large 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is claimed to deliver a pure electric driving range of 95 km (59 mi) as per WLTC procedure. Toyota also claims a hybrid fuel economy of 22 km/l (52 mpg).
