As the COVID-19 lockdowns ease around the world, Bugatti engineers get back to fine-tuning the Chiron Pur Sport. The hypercar is being tested on the Bilster Berg circuit, located at the heart of the Teutoburg Forest, Germany.
It’s a challenging track with 9 right turns, 10 left turns, 44 crests and dips, 20% uphill and 26% downhill grades with a change in elevation of 70 metres over 4,207 metres.
The testing team of 8 engineers includes the Head of Development Stefan Ellrott and Head of Chassis Development Jachin Schwalbe. “Given the challenging, three-dimensional topography and the well-secured track here with its ample run-off zones, we can push the Pur Sport to its physical limits,” comments Ellrott.

In case you missed the story, the Pur Sport has lost around 50 kg compared with the Chiron, while the downforce has been increased, and the chassis is firm. In addition, the 7-speed DCT now has 15% shorter gear ratios. “The W16 engine with 1,500 PS and 1,600 Nm of torque now feels like it revs up even faster, providing a significantly more tangible and emotive driving experience,” says Ellrott.
Thanks to the new suspension geometry, the softer Michelin tyres with even better grip and the enormous rear wing, the acceleration of the Pur Sport out of corners is even more brutal, according to Jachin Schwalbe.
Prototype
As a result, the Chiron Pur Sport is claimed to accelerate in 6th gear from 60 to 120 km/h almost 2 seconds faster than the already fast Chiron. All in all, the elasticity values are 40% higher than those of the Chiron.
Series production of the Pur Sport will start in the second half of 2020. Limited to 60 units, each will carry a price tag of €3 million.
Bugatti said that further tests on race tracks will follow in the weeks to come, including the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife.
