Hyundai is adding a hot hatch version of the new i20 to its portfolio, which has undergone testing on a frozen lake in Arjeplog, Sweden, a popular winter testing ground for carmakers. A teaser video showcases the i20 N prototype “evolving” from the i20 WRC rally car and RM19 (a mid-engined RWD track prototype).
The first video shows the i20 WRC rally car departing from a vehicle transporter and driving through darkened roads in Lapland. As dawn breaks, it picks up speed, driving through snow-covered forests and around hairpin curves to reach its real playground: a frozen lake.
The video cuts to the RM19, skidding sideways along the road and leaving a plume of snow in its wake. In an interior shot, we can see Hyundai Motorsport’s WRC driver Thierry Neuville taming the prototype.
The camera cuts again, and this time we see a camouflaged prototype of the i20 N as it drives off far into the frozen lake.
Very interesting car. Very precise. Very easy handling. The engine is revving nicely and the noise is very interesting as well. I’m looking forward to getting this one to drive in WRC! – Thierry Neuville
As with other N models, the i20 N will be track-capable and street legal, Hyundai said.
