The i20 is one of Hyundai’s most successful models offering practicality and reliability. To continue this success story, the 3rd generation model has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show. For the first time, the i20 boasts a 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.
As for the looks, the new i20 adopts Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language which debuted with the 2020 Sonata. As with the latest Hyundais, it looks sharp, creasy, and sculpted. The taillamp design might remind you of the new Kia Optima.
Compared to its predecessor, there are changes in dimensions too. The new i20 measures 5 mm longer, 30 mm wider and 24 mm shorter. Its wheelbase is up by 10 mm. Adding to the sharp looks are new 17-inch alloy wheels.
There are 10 exterior colors to choose from including 4 new ones: Intense Blue, Aurora Gray, Aqua Turquoise and Brass. In addition, the Phantom Black roof can be opted for a two-tone finish as demonstrated in the example here.
The interior sketch above gives us an idea of the new i20’s layout. Features or options would include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, and Hyundai SmartSense safety features.

Safety and driving assistance features would include Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC), Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LDVA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-traffic Collision Assist (RCCA), Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist – Reverse (PCA-R), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – now with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keep Assist System (LKA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), and High Beam Assist (HBA).
The NSCC uses the navigation system to anticipate upcoming curves or straights on highways and adjusts the vehicle speed for safer driving. The ISLA alerts drivers through audio and visual warnings when they are driving too fast and exceed the speed limit. When combined with the manual speed limiter, ISLA can even adapt the speed autonomously. The LDVA warns the driver when the vehicle ahead of them starts moving forward in cases where there is a delay to their reaction, for example at traffic lights.
As for the technical bits, the new i20 offers two Euro 6d compliant petrol engines. The 1.2-litre (1,197 cc) 4-cylinder petrol engine produces 61.8 kW (84 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 118 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
There’s also a 1.0-litre (998 cc) 3-cylinder T-GDi (turbocharged petrol) engine in three variants. The first variant is tuned to produce 73.5 kW (100 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 172 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT. The same powertrain in the second variant is coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.
In the third variant, the 1.0L turbo petrol puts out 88.2 kW (120 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. This variant too is coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.
In the mild-hybrid variants, the manual transmission is called Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). The iMT decouples the engine from the transmission after the driver releases the accelerator, allowing the car to enter into coasting mode and save fuel. Download the new i20 technical sheet here.
The new i20 will be produced in Europe at Hyundai’s production plant in İzmit, Turkey.
