Hyundai Motor Group and LA-based startup Canoo have announced a collaboration to jointly develop an electric vehicle platform based on Canoo’s skateboard design for upcoming Hyundai and Kia models. This new collaboration reminds us of the similar Ford and Rivian collaboration.
As part of the collaboration, Canoo will provide engineering services to help develop a fully scalable, all-electric platform to meet Hyundai and Kia specifications. Hyundai intends to build a range of electrified vehicles including small-sized EVs and Purpose Built Vehicles (PBV).
Canoo is working on subscription-only EVs. While the design looks like it is intended for shared mobility services, Canoo claims that it “will free its customers from the burden of ownership by offering a hassle- and commitment-free EV subscription for one monthly, affordable price and with no set end date.”
It also claims that the idea is to move away from traditional looking cars (EVs) and to maximize the interior space with minimalist design.
The vehicle is autonomous ready with 7 cameras, 5 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. There’s also steer-by-wire technology which eliminates the need for a mechanical connection.
Canoo claims to have reached a Beta testing phase within 19 months of inception, and the company recently opened the waitlist for its first vehicle that is expected to launch in 2021.
