Global NCAP crash tests redi-GO, Santro, Wagon R and Ertiga

In the latest round of Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia crash tests, the Made-in-India cars have shown a mixed safety performance. The tested models include Datsun redi-GO, Hyundai Santro, and MSIL’s Wagon R and Ertiga. The cars were subjected to frontal offset tests at a speed of 64 km/h.

Datsun redi-GO

The Datsun redi-GO has scored only 1 star in Adult Occupant Protection and 2 stars for the Child Occupant. The tested model included a driver airbag and ABS, and no other safety feature. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding any further loadings. The footwell area was also rated as unstable. Full report here.

Hyundai Santro

As for the second generation Hyundai Santro, the Global NCAP awarded a 2 star rating for both Adult Occupant and Child Occupant Protection. The tested model included a front airbag, ABS, and driver seatbelt reminder.

The report said that the protection offered to the driver and passenger’s head and neck was good. The driver’s chest showed weak protection while the passenger’s chest protection was marginal. Here too, the bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding any further loadings. The footwell area was rated as unstable too. Full report here.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

MSIL’s 2019 Wagon R is a smart looking vehicle. It scored 2 stars for both Adult and Child Occupant Protection. The tested model included a front airbag, ABS, and seatbelt reminder for the driver & front passenger.

For the Wagon R too, the report said the same as the Santro. The bodyshell and footwell area was rated as unstable. Full report here.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The MPV, currently in its second generation, managed to score 3 stars for both Adult and Child Occupant Protection. The tested model included safety features such as two front airbags, ABS, seatbelt reminder for the driver & front passenger, ISOFIX anchorages, and front seatbelt pretensioners.

The report said that the protection offered to the driver and passenger’s head and neck was good. The driver’s chest protection was marginal while the passenger’s chest showed good protection. The driver and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they could impact with the dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the tranfascia tube.

For the Ertiga too, the bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding any further loadings. The footwell area was rated as unstable too. The report further added that the passenger pretensioner failed to work properly during the test. Full report here.
