Nearly two years after the Concept was revealed, the series-production all-electric Mini Cooper is here with SE suffix. The production model retains some of the design elements of the concept.
These include the closed grille with yellow decorative insert, exterior mirror caps in the same optional color, and the optional 17-inch light-alloy wheels with asymmetrical design. As standard, the car gets 16-inch light-alloy wheels and LED headlamps. Unlike the concept, there are no aggressive air intakes and side blades. While the door handles sit flush with the body in the Concept, here it’s a traditional pull type.
The interior layout is a familiar one with model-specific touches. As standard, the seats come in Double Stripe Carbon Black fabric, while there are several packages available to spice things up. The car also gets a 5.5-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with model-specific graphics. A 6.5-inch Connected Navigation touchscreen is also standard, while the buyers can upgrade to 8.8-inch Connected Navigation Plus.
Other standard features include 2-zone automatic air conditioning with heat pump technology. The interior is heated by means of a heat pump which collects (waste) heat from the motor, drive control, battery and outside air before feeding it into the air conditioning system; claimed to use 75% less energy than a conventional electric heating system.
As we can see in the picture, the Cooper SE is still a front-wheel-drive car. The motor produces 135 kW (184 metric hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque, enough for a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 7.3 seconds. The top speed is limited to 150 km/h (93 mph). In order to alert the pedestrians and other road users, a sound is generated via the speaker system.
The T-shaped 32.6 kWh battery pack on the vehicle floor consists of lithium-ion cells subdivided into 12 modules; claimed to offer a range of up to 270 km (168 mi). Can be charged at a household socket, wallbox or public charging stations, DC fast charging possible at up to 50 kW — 80% charge can be achieved in just 35 minutes, apparently.
Driving modes include Sport, Green, and Green+. In the latter, comfort functions such as heating, air conditioning, and seat heating are limited or deactivated in order to increase the range of the vehicle. Recuperation can be configured for one-pedal feeling.
The Cooper SE sits 30 mm lower than the Cooper S. The car also gets DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, tweaked specifically for the spontaneous power delivery of the electric motors.
