Ford has decided to bring back the Corsair nameplate for the thriving compact luxury SUV segment. This is the 2020 Lincoln Corsair. The name is derived from Latin word “cursus”, meaning journey, apparently.
The Corsair slots between the full-size Navigator and the mid-size Aviator, and also borrows the design elements and technology from those aforementioned SUVs. The small SUV sits on the same platform as the new Ford Kuga that we saw recently.
Some of the design elements such as the connected tail lamps are similar to the Lincoln MKC which the Corsair replaces. However, the rear-end reminds you of something from Stuttgart.
As for dimensions, the Corsair measures 4,587mm in length, 1,935mm in width (with mirrors folded) and 1,628mm in height. Wheelbase measures 2,710mm.
Standard features on the exterior includes LED headlamps with LED signature and automatic on/off technology, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Up to 20-inch wheels are available as options.
As standard, the features inside include Comfort Seats (10-way) power with 2-way power lumbar and driver-side memory, 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system, Lincoln Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, two 12-volt outlets, two USB ports, active noise control technology, and rear privacy glass.
Six unique symphonic chimes – replacing standard electronic alerts – inform drivers of everything from an open fuel door to an unbuckled seat belt. The chimes, recorded by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, add another layer to the calming soundscape of the cabin, the company said.
The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster we’re seeing here is an option. More options include Head-Up display, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, 14-speaker Revel audio system, wireless charging pad, rain sensing wipers, and Phone As A Key.
Power panoramic Vista Roof with power sunshade, PowerFold second-row seats, and adaptive suspension are also in the options list. For those who want more, Lincoln offers Perfect Position seats with 24-way adjustability, and massage functionality.
According to Lincoln, the Corsair offers more legroom in the second row than many larger luxury SUVs including the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Tesla Model X. Not sure if they’re referring to the outgoing GLS or the new one.
Standard safety includes a suite of driver-assist features known as Lincoln Co-Pilot360. It comes with Pre-Collision Assist with automatic emergency braking and Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Information System, Lane Keeping System, rear backup camera and auto high-beam lighting. Buyers can go for Lincoln Co-Pilot360 Plus which adds Adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, Evasive steer assist, Reverse brake assist, and Active Park Assist Plus.
Powertrains
Powering the 2020 Corsair is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 250 hp and 275 lb.-ft. (373 Nm) of torque. Also on offer is a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 280 hp and 310 lb.-ft. (420 Nm) of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. AWD is standard for those who pick the 2.3-litre engine.
